Sunday, November 19, 2023 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm EST

Hybrid Hybrid Event

Panelists Mark Haubner, Mary Morgan and Margaret Rose de Cruz will talk about the environmental impact of trash and ways we can improve our carbon footprint through reusing, recycling, upcycling and repairing goods.

Mark Haubner is Chair of the Environmental Advisory Committee for the Town of Riverhead and on the Climate Smart Communities Task Force. He is President of the North Fork Environmental Council and an early leader of Drawdown East End. With a Certificate in Sustainability and Behavior Change from the University of California at San Diego, Mark writes Community Based Social Marketing programs for all of the organizations he leads and with a few other thoughtful people has started a Food Waste to Compost and a Zero Waste Initiative for all of Long Island.

Greenporter Margaret Rose de Cruz, a Holistic Health Practitioner for the last 30 years, is also a workshop presenter with the Pachamama Alliance, “to create an environmentally sustainable, socially just and spiritually fulfilling human presence on the Planet”. She has been active in the Transition Town Movement, North Fork Audubon and helped introduce “Drawdown” to the East End. As a NFEC board member she initiated Repair Cafes on the North Fork to reduce unnecessary waste, infuse value into forgotten hands-on skills, foster neighborhood connections, and share the joy of “fixing usable stuff.” One of Margaret’s favorite sayings: “Just throw it away you say? There is no “away.”

Mary Morgan says she is a Locavore turned Climatarian. She lives in Orient with her husband Tom, a mushroom forager. They are early founders of Slow Food East End, started in 2004. Four years ago, Mary co-founded a grassroots East End effort inspired by the climate science analysis of Project Drawdown to advance local climate solutions. With Mark Haubner she co-authors Climate Local Now, a column for the East End Beacon. She is currently volunteering with the Long Island Organics Council to run the East End Countertop Recycler Pilot to engage our community in upcycling our food scraps to benefit our soils.
